Inside Cap: a desktop recorder with a web sharing layer

A public-source breakdown of the recording app, web dashboard and storage choices.

Product Hunt records #2 of the day and #3 of the week for its 28 November 2024 launch. An established build, freshly checked.

01

What the repository confirms

Cap’s current README separates a Tauri desktop application with SolidStart UI and Rust backend from a Next.js web application. It also names Drizzle and MySQL, and documents S3-compatible storage. Its desktop code handles capture and export; the web layer supports sharing and management.

02

The useful design decision

FreeStack takeaway: a product can have two distinct jobs without forcing them into the same interface. Recording needs immediate feedback on your computer; a shared link needs a simple viewing experience. Sketch those journeys separately before choosing a framework.

03

Borrow the pattern, not the whole stack

For a first experiment, record one short clip and design a share page with a title, video and one next action. A full recorder is a much larger engineering project. Public source availability does not make hosting, storage, commercial services or support cost-free.
